DTF vs DTG vs UV: What 47 Rush Orders Taught Me About Picking the Right Epson Printer

DTF (direct-to-film) prints your design onto a transfer film, applies adhesive powder, then heat-presses it onto the garment. Because the ink sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking in, DTF works across a wide range of materials: cotton, polyester, nylon, blends. That flexibility makes it a natural fit for small-batch custom orders where you never know what fabric is coming next.

DTG (direct-to-garment) prints directly onto the shirt, similar to a large-format photo printer. The catch: it's at its best on 100% cotton. Polyester and blends usually need pretreatment, which adds labor time and per-order cost. On short runs, DTG's per-unit cost is higher because of that prep work and the longer print cycle.

If 70% of your work is cotton and you're regularly running 300+ pieces per order, DTG might be the right call. If your clients order smaller quantities across synthetic fabrics, DTF wins. The best printer is the one that matches the work you already have. Everything else is justification.

This same logic applies to a cylinder UV printer. That's a machine designed for printing on cylindrical objects — mugs, bottles, pens, cosmetic tubes. It's genuinely useful if your clients order branded merchandise. But if you buy one because it's "cool technology" while your current orders are flat textiles, you've parked a lot of money on the floor. That's capital that could have gone into the equipment you actually need.

The Deep Cause #2: The "Smallest" and "Cheapest" Trap

Searching for the "smallest DTF printer" makes sense when your workshop space is tight. But footprint is a terrible primary spec for a production machine. Smaller printers usually mean:

How to Choose Without Regret

  1. Pull your last 50 orders. Write down: fabric type, quantity, turnaround time, and gross margin. This is your real requirement set. Every printer you evaluate should be measured against this list — not against a spec sheet.
  2. Find your actual bottleneck. Is it print speed? Drying time? Substrate compatibility? Or is it the fact that the machine you already own doesn't fit your workflow? These are different problems with different solutions.
  3. Calculate TCO, not sticker price. Get complete quotes: setup, training, first-year maintenance, consumables. I've seen $500 quotes turn into $800 after shipping and revision fees, while the $650 all-inclusive quote was actually the cheaper choice. The lowest upfront number is frequently the most expensive thing you'll ever buy.
  4. Buy for your primary workflow, not your edge cases. The "just in case" job that might show up someday is not a business case. It's an excuse for buying the wrong machine.
