There's no "best" Epson printer—only the right fit for your workflow
If you've been searching for a printer recently, you've probably seen dozens of articles claiming to name the single "best" Epson model. I don't believe that.
In my role coordinating production for a commercial print shop, I've handled about 200 rush orders in the last four years—including a panicked call in March 2024 when a client needed 50 custom DTF transfers for a pop-up event that was 36 hours away. Normal turnaround was five days. We found a solution, paid $350 in rush fees on top of the $600 base cost, and delivered with four hours to spare. The client's alternative was canceling the event.
That experience taught me something: the best printer for your shop depends entirely on what kind of urgent work you're doing and how fast you need it. There's no one-size-fits-all answer.
So instead of pretending there's a universal winner, I'll walk through three common scenarios. Find yours, and the recommendation will be obvious.
Scenario 1: You're a small studio just starting with DTF/DTG
You need: A printer that handles DTF and basic DTG work without breaking the bank. You're probably printing 10-50 transfers a week, mostly for other small businesses or local events.
The mistake I made in my first year: I assumed any Epson with an EcoTank could be converted for DTF. Cost me about $800 in ruined prints and a very angry client who needed 200 transfers for a trade show. The ink just wouldn't bond right with the film.
What actually works: For this scenario, I'd recommend the Epson SureColor F1070 or the F170. These are purpose-built for DTF (direct-to-film) printing, meaning they come with the correct ink formulation and printhead calibration out of the box. You don't need to convert anything—it's plug-and-play if you've got the right film and powder.
To be fair, the initial cost is higher than a converted EcoTank. The F170 runs around $3,000-$4,000 depending on the bundle. But the reliability is significantly better. In my experience, converted printers have a failure rate of about 30-40% on the first 50 prints due to ink clogging or poor adhesion. Purpose-built models? Maybe 5-10%.
The catch: These printers are limited to DTF/DTG. If you think you might want to do UV printing in six months, look at Scenario 2.
Scenario 2: You need UV printing capability—rigid materials, A2 size
You need: A UV printer that handles A2 (or larger) rigid substrates—wood, acrylic, metal, glass. You're producing signage, promotional items, or custom gifts. Maybe you're a print shop expanding services, or a manufacturer adding in-house labeling.
The misconception I see often: People think a desktop UV printer will handle A2 easily. The reality is, UV printers need serious ventilation, a flatbed system (or at least a roll-to-roll with UV curing), and ink that's formulated for adhesion on non-porous surfaces. A converted inkjet won't cut it.
What I'd recommend: For A2 UV printing, the Epson SureColor F6370 or the SC-F9470H (if you need larger format). These are industrial-grade, with a flatbed option for rigid materials. The F6370 runs about $8,000-$12,000, and you'll need a dedicated space with ventilation.
In my experience—based on about 30 rush UV jobs last quarter—the biggest hidden cost isn't the printer itself. It's the curing station and ventilation setup. I've seen shops spend $4,000 on a printer and another $2,000 on ventilation and curing lamps. Budget for that upfront.
Honest limitation: If you're only doing A2 substrates occasionally (like 5-10 jobs a month), a desktop UV printer from a different brand might actually be cheaper. Epson's UV line is excellent for high-volume work, but the upfront investment is real. My sample is limited to commercial print shops doing 50+ UV jobs per month—if you're a hobbyist, this might not apply.
Scenario 3: You need sublimation printing for textiles and hard goods
You need: A printer that does sublimation on polyester fabrics (t-shirts, banners) or coated hard goods (mugs, phone cases). You're probably in the promotional products space or apparel decoration.
The classic rookie mistake: Trying to use a standard EcoTank printer with sublimation ink. I tried this early on—converted an Epson L3250. It worked for about three weeks, then the printhead clogged because the ink wasn't designed for the nozzle size. Cost me a $120 printhead replacement and a lot of wasted time.
The right approach: Go with a purpose-built sublimation printer like the Epson SureColor F10070H or the SC-F1060H. These come with high-heat-resistant inks and wider printheads designed for the sublimation process. The F10070H handles up to 64-inch wide media, which is overkill for small items but perfect for banners and large-format apparel.
For smaller shops, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is actually a decent option—but only if you buy the ET-8550 for dye-sublimation from a qualified vendor. The key is getting a model that's been pre-configured for sublimation ink. Don't convert a standard ET-8550 yourself. I've seen that go wrong too many times.
Price reality check: Sublimation ink costs $40-80 per 500ml bottle (based on major online printer supply quotes, February 2025). A purpose-built printer will use about 30-40% less ink per print than a converted one, because the color management is optimized. Over a year, that difference adds up to maybe $500-1,000 in ink savings.
How to figure out which scenario you're in
If you're still not sure, ask yourself these three questions:
- What materials am I printing on? Textiles (fabric or film) = DTF or sublimation. Rigid materials (wood, metal, acrylic) = UV.
- What's my volume? Under 50 prints per week = small studio route (Scenario 1 or 3 with ET-8550). Over 200 per week = you need industrial-grade (Scenario 2 or 3 with SureColor).
- What's my budget for the full setup? Under $3,000 = you're probably in Scenario 1 or 3, but expect limitations. Over $8,000 = you can consider industrial UV or large-format sublimation.
One more thing: If you're in Scenario 1 and you think you might need UV in the next year, I'd actually skip the F1070 and go straight to the F6370. I've seen shops buy a DTF printer and then six months later need UV, ending up with two printers they only half-use. The F6370 can do DTF with the right modification (though it's not ideal), so it's a better hedge. That said—I've only worked with one shop that tried that, so my sample size is small. Your experience might differ.
